As a teacher, guide, mentor Prophet (PBUH) had a responsibility like no other in history. For the last Prophet (PBUH) the task was even more compelling as there would be no prophet after him.

NEVER FOUND FAULT OF OTHERS

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales. Do not look for other’s faults. Do not spy one another, and do not practice Najsh (means to offer a high price for something in order to allure another customer who is interested in the thing). Do not be jealous of one another and do not nurse enmity against one another. Do not sever ties with one another. Become the slaves of Allah, and be brothers to one another as He commanded. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He should neither oppress him nor humiliate him. The piety is here! The piety is here!” While saying so he pointed towards his chest. “It is enough evil for a Muslim to look down upon his Muslim brother. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for his brother in Faith: his blood, his wealth and his honor. Verily, Allah does not look to your bodies nor to your faces but He looks to your hearts and your deeds.”

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: I have been commissioned with words which are concise but comprehensive in meaning; I have been helped by terror (in the hearts of enemies): and while I was asleep I was brought the keys of the treasures of the earth which were placed in my hand. And Abfi Huraira added: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has left (for his heavenly home) and you are now busy in getting them.Reference   : Sahih Muslim 523b

AVOID ARGUMENTS

  • Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do not acquire knowledge to impress the scholars, nor to argue with the fools, and do not seek the best seat in the gathering by it. His face would turn red when he got angry. Narrated `Aisha: The Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon me while there was a curtain having pictures (of animals) in the house. His face got red with anger, and then he got hold of the curtain and tore it into pieces. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Such people as paint these pictures will receive the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection .” Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 6109

He mentioned that to the Prophet (PBUH) and his face turned red. Then he said: “May Allah have mercy on Moosa; he was annoyed with more than this and he was patient.”

Musnad Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal Hadith 3608 Vol 3 p 288

PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: EMBRACING A COMPANION TO EXPRESS HIS LOVE

Sometimes the Prophet (PBUH) would embrace someone to express his feeling of love. There was a companion named Zaahir, who the prophet (s) loved. And he was a Bedouin and he would come to Madinah to sell his commodities in the market place and so the prophet (s) grabbed him from behind one day and he said: “who is going to purchase this slave” and so Zaahir, just like many people that you know, he leaned back at the prophet and he said: “I’m not worth anything”.

You know, you may know somebody who would say the same thing. And so the prophet (s), he said Zaahir said: ‘’Am not moving in the market place, I’m not something I’m not a hot product’’

  • The Prophet (PBUH) said: “If less than a fingernail sized piece of what is in Paradise could appear, it would adorn everything in all directions between Heaven and Earth. Musnad Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal Vol 5 p 503

Then the Prophet (PBUH) said: “It is the palm tree.” Musnad Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal Vol 4 p 173

SWEARING TO GIVE EMPHASIS

  • Abu Hurayra said, “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went out to a group of his Companions who were laughing and talking. He said, ‘By the One in whose hand my soul is, if you knew what I knew, you would laugh little and weep much.’ Then he left and the people were weeping. Then Allah Almighty revealed to him, ‘Muhammad! Why did you make My slaves despair?’ The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Give good news, guide people and draw near to one another.'” Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani) Reference        : Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 25

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) took hold of me and said: “Worship Allah as if you see Him, and be in this world as if you are a stranger or a traveler passing through.” Musnad Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal Vol 5 p 48

GIVING DUE ATTENTION

Abu Rifa’ah reported that, “I came to the Prophet (PBUH) while he was delivering a sermon, and I said, “O Messenger of Allah, here is a stranger enquiring about his religion, he does not know his religion.” The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) looked at me and left his sermon till he came to me, and he was given a chair whose legs I assumed to be made of iron. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sat on it and he began to teach me what Allah had taught him. He then went back (to the pulpit) for his sermon and completed it.”

KNOWING NAMES AND GIVING TITLES

Secrets of Leadership and Influence p 65

On the authority of ‘Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) who said, “Three things will make your brother’s heart incline towards you in love: to greet him when you meet him, to make a place for him to sit in gatherings and to call him by the names he loves most.”

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d:

The most beloved names to `Ali was Abu Turab, and he used to be pleased when we called him by it, for none named him Abu Turab (for the first time), but the Prophet. Once `Ali got angry with (his wife) Fatima, and went out (of his house) and slept near a wall in the mosque. The Prophet (ﷺ) came searching for him, and someone said, “He is there, Lying near the wall.” The Prophet (ﷺ) came to him while his (`Ali’s) back was covered with dust. The Prophet (ﷺ) started removing the dust from his back, saying, “Get up, O Abu Turab!” Reference              : Sahih al-Bukhari 6204

GOING INTO DETAILS

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah: “When one of you puts his shoes on, let me start on the right, and when he takes them off, let him start on the left. ATTENTIVE LISTENTING

Muhammad bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that, “I was told that while ‘Utbah bin Rabi’ah – who was noble and wise among his people – was with the people of Quraysh and the Prophet (PBUH) was alone in the mosque, ‘Utbah said, “O people of Quraysh! Shall I go to him (i.e, the Prophet) and talk to him? I will make some offers to him so he might accept them and then leave us.” They answered in the affirmative.

‘Utbah stood up until he sat before the Prophet (PBUH). He (narrator) mentioned the narration concerning what ‘Utbah said to him and what he offered him of wealth, kingdom, and other things.

When ‘Utbah finished, the Prophet (PBUH) said to him, “Abu AL-Walid! Have you finished?” He said, “I have.”

CALLING ATTENTION TO AN IMPORTANT EVENT

The traditionists have related from Ibn Abbas with several chains of transmitters the tradition that when the Holy Prophet was commanded to present the message of Islam openly, and he was instructed in the Quran to warn first of all his nearest kinsfolk of the punishment of God, he ascended the Mount Safa one morning and called out aloud: Ya sabahah (O, the calamity of the morning!). This alarm in Arabia was raised by the person who noticed early at dawn an enemy tribe advancing against his tribe. When the Holy Messenger made this call, the people enquired as to who had made the call. They were told that it was Muhammad (upon whom be Allah’s peace). Thereat the people of all the clans of Quraish rushed out. Everyone who could, came; he who could not, sent another one for himself. When the People had assembled, the Holy Messenger calling out each clan by name, viz. O Bani Hashim, O Bani Abdul Muttalib, O Bani Fihr, O Bani so and so, said: “If I were to tell you that behind the hill there was an enemy host ready to fall upon you, would you believe me?” The people responded with one voice, saying that they never had so far experienced a lie from him. The Holy Prophet said: “Then I warn you that you are heading for a torment.” Thereupon, before anyone else could speak, Abu Lahab, the Holy Prophet’s uncle, said: “May you perish! Did you summon us for this?” Another tradition adds that he picked up a stone to throw at the Holy Prophet. (Musnad Ahmad, Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ibn Jarir, and others).

May Allah give us the ability to follow the Prophetic teachings and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.

And Allah knows best.
