Du'a (Supplications)

The Accepted Du’a

And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you."

Allah is the one who answers our prayers. In a hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) said, du’a is worship itself. (Tirmidhi).  How should we call upon Allah in order for our du’a to be accepted? What does Allah say about dua  – how to call Him so we may get response to our prayers.

And your Lord says, “Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible. Sura Ghafir 60

PRE-REQUISITES OF DU’A

IMAN

Iman is essential for our du’a to be accepted. That means what is in the heart of belief in Allah, His angels, His book, His Messengers and the Last Day. Also belief in the unseen.

IKHLAS

It is required that we call upon Allah with sincerity.

So invoke Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, although the disbelievers dislike it. Sura Ghafir 14

ISTIJABAH

When we call upon Allah we must keep in mind that Allah has also asked us to follow the Qur’an and Sunnah so we must respond to Him. We must obey Allah and His Messenger.

And when My servants ask you, [O Muḥammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided. Sura Al Baqarah 186

HALAL INCOME

Ensuring that one’s food and clothing are good (i.e., halal). Muslim (1015) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “O people, Allah is Good and does not accept anything but that which is good. Allaah enjoins upon the believers the same as He enjoined upon the Messengers. He says (interpretation of the meaning):

‘O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Tayyibaat [all kinds of Halal (lawful) foods which Allah has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits)] and do righteous deeds. Verily, I am Well‑Acquainted with what you do’ [al-Mu’minoon 23:51]

‘O you who believe! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with’ [al-Baqarah 2:172]

Then he mentioned a man who travels for a long distance and is disheveled and dusty, and he stretches forth his hands towards heaven saying, ‘O Lord, O Lord,’ but his food is haram, his drink is haram, his clothing is haram, he has been nourished with haram, so how can he be responded to?

Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ensuring that one’s food, drink and clothing are halal, and that one is nourished with halal, is a means of having one’s du’aa’ answered.

HOW TO MAKE DU’A

TADARRA

Talking from the bottom of your heart. You mean business. Crying like a baby. Not from your tongue but from every organ.

Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors. Sura Al-A’raf 55

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech – in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless. Sura Al-A’raf 205

Say, “Who rescues you from the darknesses of the land and sea [when] you call upon Him imploring [aloud] and privately, ‘If He should save us from this [crisis], we will surely be among the thankful.'”

Sura Al An’am 63

KHUFYA

Allah must be called privately. The Prophet (PBUH) prayed the entire night on the eve of the battle of Badr asking Allah for victory – Allah responded to his prayer.

Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors. Sura Al-A’raf 55

When he called to his Lord a private call [i.e., supplication]. Sura Maryam 3

Say, “Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful [ar-Raḥmān]. Whichever [name] you call – to Him belong the best names.” And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way Sura Al-Isra 110

KHOUF

Fear of Allah is needed.

And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good. Sura Al-A’raf 56

TAMA’A

Also hope at the same time that Allah will answer our prayer.

And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good. Sura Al-A’raf 56

So We responded to him, and We gave to him John, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive. Sura Al-Anbya 90

And Allah knows best.
