WHO IS ALLAH?

We were created to live with the Creator, knowing Him, conversing with Him and seeing Him in everlasting habitation. Ibn al-Jawzi

1 ORIGINATOR OF THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH

[He is] Originator of the heavens and the earth. How could He have a son when He does not have a companion [i.e., wife] and He created all things? And He is, of all things, Knowing.

That is Allāh, your Lord; there is no deity except Him, the Creator of all things, so worship Him. And He is Disposer of all things.

Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives [all] vision; and He is the Subtle, the Aware.

Sura Al An Am 6:101-103

2 THERE IS NOTHING LIKE HIM

[He is] Creator of the heavens and the earth. He has made for you from yourselves, mates, and among the cattle, mates; He multiplies you thereby. There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

Sura Ash Shura 42:11

3 THE ONE ERECTED THE HEAVENS WITHOUT PILLARS

It is Allāh who erected the heavens without pillars that you [can] see; then He established Himself above the Throne1 and made subject2 the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. He arranges [each] matter; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain.

Sura Ar Rad 13:2

4 OUR CREATOR

Allāh is the one who created you, then provided for you, then will cause you to die, and then will give you life. Are there any of your “partners” who does anything of that? Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.

Sura Ar Rum 30:40

5 LORD OF THE WORLDS

It is Allāh who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a structure [i.e., ceiling] and formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allāh, your Lord; then blessed is Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

Sura Ghafir 40:64

6 KNOWER OF THE SEEN AND UNSEEN

He is Allāh, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

Sura Hashr 59:22

7 LIGHT OF THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH

Allāh is the Light1 of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light2 is like a niche within which is a lamp;3 the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allāh guides to His light whom He wills. And Allāh presents examples for the people, and Allāh is Knowing of all things.

Sura Nur 24:35

8 THE EVER LIVING, THE SELF-SUSTAINING

Allāh – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī4 extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

  • Ayatul Qursi 2:255

9 HE IT IS WHO CAUSES GARDENS TO GROW

And He it is who causes gardens to grow, [both] trellised and untrellised, and palm trees and crops of different [kinds of] food and olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar. Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakāh] on the day of its harvest. And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.

Sura Al An Am 6:141

10 HE WHO GIVES LIFE

Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord [merely] because Allāh had given him kingship? When Abraham said, “My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death,” he said, “I give life and cause death.” Abraham said, “Indeed, Allāh brings up the sun from the east, so bring it up from the west.” So the disbeliever was overwhelmed [by astonishment], and Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Or [consider such an example] as the one who passed by a township which had fallen into ruin. He said, “How will Allāh bring this to life after its death?” So Allāh caused him to die for a hundred years; then He revived him. He said, “How long have you remained?” He [the man] said, “I have remained a day or part of a day.” He said, “Rather, you have remained one hundred years. Look at your food and your drink; it has not changed with time. And look at your donkey; and We will make you a sign for the people. And look at the bones [of this donkey] – how We raise them and then We cover them with flesh.” And when it became clear to him, he said, “I know that Allāh is over all things competent.”

And [mention] when Abraham said, “My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead.” [Allāh] said, “Have you not believed?” He said, “Yes, but [I ask] only that my heart may be satisfied.” [Allāh] said, “Take four birds and commit them to yourself.1 Then [after slaughtering them] put on each hill a portion of them; then call them – they will come [flying] to you in haste. And know that Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.”

Sura Al Baqarah 258-260

11 HE WHO CREATED THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH IN SIX DAYS

And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days – and His Throne had been upon water – that He might test you as to which of you is best in deed. But if you say, “Indeed, you are resurrected after death,” those who disbelieve will surely say, “This is not but obvious magic.”

Sura Hud 11:7

12 THERE IS NO EQUIVALENT TO HIM

Say, “He is Allāh, [who is] One,1
Allāh, the Eternal Refuge.1
He neither begets nor is born,
Nor is there to Him any equivalent.”

Sura Ikhlas 112

13 THE PERPETUAL FORGIVER, WHO SENDS RAIN FROM THE SKY, GIVES INCREASE IN WEALTH AND CHILDREN

And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.
He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers
And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.
